Thanks for the help. First thing I did when I got home was try a cheater plug that disconnected the ground pin. No hum whatsoever. Sounded really good compared to my st-70 that it is replacing. Just doesn't have the gz34 rectifier, so it was a lot tighter in the low end. Wonder if I should use the c...

Hey everyone, I'v'e got a problem (Warning! Hi fi Content)
So, I've got a pretty high end version of the dynaco st-70. A lot of hiss/buzz coming from it. Normally, I tear things apart and have at it. This time I think I'll ask for a little help. Too nice to screw it up! It's a sonic frontiers sfs-40. It uses 4- 6dj8 tubes with a quad of el34's. I have no wa...

9-pin
Thanks for the replies everyone. I figured it out, thanks to Noel (stubbyfex on here). I stopped by his shop and he told me the simple way. Just push out a pin from a spare socket, and put it in. Simple as that. No unsoldering the rest of the jack, sourcing, etc. Took literally 2 minutes and I was b...

Source for large diameter 9-pin socket?
Hi everyone, need some help finding a large 9-pin socket. I was working on an old amp last night and broke a pin. The problem was that it is an old Amphenol socket for a 12ax7 that is the size of a larger octal socket. Pretty nice, too bad I broke it. More finesse next time! Anyone have any ideas? I...

Where I got the two 8-ohm taps was from the specifications for the speakers. Both the in-cabinet speaker, and the "accessory" out board speakers are rated for 8-ohm???? They both have two-pronged cords that plug into the jacks on the amp. Just like regular two pronged ac outlets(now there's an accid...

weird output taps on old amp?
Alright, I have another problem, and I'm scratching my head. I've got another donor amp that I'm working on(victor Kalart model 70-15). It has a strange speaker jack set-up. It is an old projector amplifier from the 60's and it works pretty darn good the way it is. The schematics show two taps comin...

Still waiting for the transformers... But I will say that they refunded my return shipping already. Thay say that they had to order the transformers, and that is why they were taking so long. They didn't even have any in stock? Any way, I like to buy from the little guys.( I'm a little guy that runs...

heyboers
These were heyboers that had the stickers removed. And I've used both of them enough to know the difference. And the supplier responded that yes, they were heyboer's, and that they have had issues with shipping the wrong product lately. But the deal is, I can understand making a mistake. I make plen...

Supplier problem. Should I be worked up about it?
First thing. I am not going to give a name to the supplier. I just want to get a feeling if I should be as pissed as I am. I'm about done with a build, sourced all parts, populated boards(that I built from 2 layers of a really awesome design in formica), ETC. I was just haveing a hard time deciding ...

cabinet
After switching back and forth between cabs last night. I must say the 4x12 does sound a bit better. Something about that big cabinet equals big full sound. But for a bargain alternative, the cannibis rex's really sound good. A really good pairing for the express, no one would be disappointed with t...

surprising speakers
Bringing back an old topic here. But a good one. I've been using a jcm900 1960a cabinet for my express. It sounds big! I've got one celestion heritage g12h30 55hz, 1- late seventies g12h30 55hz, and 2 g12m 75hz from the late seventies in it right now. A real good match for the express that I built. ...

Tubes, Speakers seem to affect mine the most. Also, when I turn my stereo on, the voltage in the house goes from 118 to about 110(really big system!, and really old house). I also have a really good 60hz hum that I need to dig into. But it doesn't bother me enough right now to tear it apart again. M...

press
I'm an avid pawn shop hound. I went looking for presses at about a dozen different pawn shops. Probably saw forty of them for sale. All around $60 dollars. They were mostly Central Machinery brand, and in really rough condition. Lots of vibration in the units. None of them seemed very old. There wer...

Put it all back together. Hooked up test leads to bias. Got 30 and 34. Not as tight as when I used my 6v6's. Still a little hum on prescence, but much better. Hooked up my Chinese Les Paul Custom(got ripped off, they really know how to make 'em look like the real thing now) with a set of real 60's t...

Quick check again, trying to clean it up a little. Broke a power tube socket pin. Just need to take a break for a little while. Thanks for the help, Gearhead. Probably sniffing too much solder.
