If the thing is going to be footswitchable anyway and you're guaranteed a box attatched by cable to the amp, where's the harm in a pedal, provided it gives the sound/function desired? Thanks for the suggestions, but I don't want an external boost pedal for this amp.
On the Hoffman website is a schematic for a simple gain boost that I'll use.

I decided I want two master volumes. I'm using the "rich mod" PPIMV. How do I make two dual ganged pots switchable with a relais?

edit: I realize I'd need a 5PDT relais for that. This amp has an FX loop, so wouldn't it be easier to add a switchable pot in the loop?

Are HRM's easier to overdrive on the clean channel than non-HRM's?
I can't overdrive my clean channel with my strat. I've heard various clips of HRM amps that are overdriven with a strat though.
