Re: What are 7027 tubes ?
A 7027A is pretty much a 6L6GC that was engineered to run at a higher plate and screen voltage. The pinouts are different. The internal components are more rugged and were designed to dissipate the heat and handle the high voltage. The 7027A are spec'd to run at 70% to 80% higher voltages than a 6L6...

Re: Best 5e3 tweed deluxe kit?
I recently built a Weber 5E3 kit. I subbed a lot of hardware, tube, and components. The Weber kit is good. The cabinet and speaker are outstanding. I am getting ready to build a 5F6A Bassman. Since I have rebuilt and repaired a number of amps and that I have built the 5E3 from a kit, the Bassman I w...

Re: New 5E3 Build (Weber Kit)
Very detailed analysis! One small thing to remember is that (last I checked), the Weber came with one of their made in the USA Alnico speakers, where I seem to remember the Mojo has an overseas ceramic (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). Personally, I live close enough to Kokomo that I just dri...

Re: New 5E3 Build (Weber Kit)
Final Thoughts and Financial Analysis I like the amp a lot. It sounds really good. It is probably every bit as good as the $2,300.00 hand-wired amp from Fender. It was a fairly easy build. Not a lot of pitfalls. I generated a detailed BOM, including shipping costs. Recall that I decided to upgrade ...

Re: New 5E3 Build (Weber Kit)
The Weber kit came with: Coil of yellow solid-core cloth-covered pushback Coil of blue solid-core cloth covered pushback Coil of Black "fake" cloth covered insulated stranded wire Coil of White "fake" cloth covered insulated stranded wire The black and white wire's cloth frayed easily. I figured out...

Re: New 5E3 Build (Weber Kit)
Test Made the speaker connection. But for initial testing hooked up to a 8ohm dummy load. Brought up with Variac and LB limiter with no tubes. Checked voltages (ok) Put in Copper Cap rectifier. The damn ceramic sockets were too tight. I couldn’t get it in and ended up snapping off the locator pin! ...

Re: New 5E3 Build (Weber Kit)
The Build There were not many serious challenges in building the amp. I wish I was a little better at soldering and tight fitting wires. Some of my lead dress were a little long (1/2” here, 1’4: there). Big, slightly arthritic hands and thumbs did not help. I am now in LOVE with pushback wire. 6 Bu...

Re: New 5E3 Build (Weber Kit)
Not that short a list... ... but let's add (moderately) anyway: I've been using https://www.stewmac.com/globalassets/video-and-ideas/online-resources/building-instruments/59-tweed-15w-amp-kit-instructions/download-59-tweed-15w-amp-kit-instructions too. Trust me, if you were to look at my computer a...

Re: New 5E3 Build (Weber Kit)
I noticed this layout included many technically beneficial improvements https://robrobinette.com/images/Guitar/5E3P_Build/5E3_Deluxe_Amp_Optimized_Layout.pdf I love Robinette's site and lists of mods. In my build, I wanted to as close to original as possible. I took extra care to implement a decent...

Re: New 5E3 Build (Weber Kit)
The next step was a long one and started well before I even ordered the kit. I like to do a lot of research. I watch lots of videos, I read books and lots of online resources. I studied the schematics and note the difference in layout from one design to another (it seems each of the online layouts a...

Re: New 5E3 Build (Weber Kit)
Nice! I've built a few amps using weber kits. They are all working fine after nearly 20 years of regular use. Only thing I bothered to upgrade on them were the jacks and switches. But the jacks and switches that came with the ab763 based build I'm working on now look fine (siwtches are carling). So...

Re: New 5E3 Build (Weber Kit)
It's my understanding that they've upgraded to Switchcraft jacks and Carling switches now, so don't toss the ones that came with it! The jacks in my kit are not Switchcrafts. One already easily bent out of shape (grounding switch) and is in the recycling bin.... :( I used their switches. I used my ...

Re: New 5E3 Build (Weber Kit)
Yup. Good advice for anyone. I have a pretty well equipped shop. Limiters, Variacs, external powre supplies, tone generators, osc scopes, DVMs, etc.

New 5E3 Build (Weber Kit)
Hey ya'lls. After rebuilding that '74 Fender Twin Reverb, I got the amp-build itch. I decided on building a '57 Style Tweed Deluxe. I like the ’74 Twin, but it is pretty sterile and after a jam session with a friend I realized that I wanted something much lower wattage that had some unique tonal cha...

My plan was to sell it, but it really sounds fantastic. I can't stop playing through it!
