Re: Late to the Trainwreck party, gonna build one anyway.

I personally am not afraid of power. My practice rig, whichever of most of the amps I own, they're all 100 watters. I've been playing my TWX and my '73 stock Marshall Superlead a lot this week, and they get run with the volume at least halfway up. Because that's where the big tone is hiding. Nobody ...

Re: Late to the Trainwreck party, gonna build one anyway.

I revise my estimate...cranked up to about 9 (or 4:30 if you prefer clock faces) is the sweet yet brutal spot.

I've ordered the chassis and transformers to begin two more Wreck builds.

There's my topic on that amp build. Photos included.

Prepping to build three more soon. Maybe up to 5.

Re: Taming the brightness

Marshall powerbrake, attenuation varies as needed, sometimes I use NONE and just let it rip. Transformers.... Mojotone Mojo791 ATS5200 output. Amp Parts Direct APD-8065H power. Using 2 4x12s is impractical for my customers. I need practical recommendations for tonal response modifications in the cir...

Re: Oscillation problem with Express Clone

About Orange Drops...there's something about their sound I just don't like. I prefer the MKT1813s. I've also seen a surprising number of Orange Drops that became leaky/shorted. They have a reputation for reliability but I've seen a lot that weren't.

Re: Oscillation problem with Express Clone

Excessive bass can itself be a symptom of oscillation, in rare instances. Do you have an oscilloscope? Use it to watch for oscillation. I have to say, I don't like those orange drop caps in there very much. I favor MKT1813 series Vishays. They're about as close as you can get to a modern Philips Mus...

Re: Taming the brightness

Another answer that works well for me....I just use my Mesa horizontal 2x12 cabinet with V30s in it. The darkness of that cabinet has a synergy with the brightness of the amp. It sounds killer....despite them being V30s.

Re: Taming the brightness

It definitely warms up when run pretty hard. I set the volume to about halfway which IS loud and leave it there. And that's the tonal sweet spot. I run it through an attenuator and use the attenuator as the volume control.

Re: Taming the brightness

Yes, I'll give that a try. I don't want the "fix" to be something external to the amp. If I make another one like this and sell it to somebody, the last thing I want to do is tell him to find and buy a specific kind of instrument cable to get his desired tone. I guess I'm going to have to experiment...

Re: Taming the brightness

Respectfully, that's two people who suggested curly cables and that's not the fix I'm after. If you don't have a component related suggestion to make, within the amp chassis, then you're not making the suggestions I will consider implementing.

Re: Taming the brightness

This kind of brightness is beyond mere control adjustments to handle. Looking for suggestions on taming it by adjusting certain component values or adding a treble bleed at just the right spot in the circuit. Yes it warms up at higher volume but even then it's still pretty bright. Loud and bright is...

Taming the brightness

I've observed that my Express clone is quite a bright sounding amp. I run low treble settings, don't use the bright switch, and presence is usually at zero, and I still use the tone control of the guitar to trim the high frequencies so the feedback is just right and not killing eardrums. I could exp...

Re: Oscillation problem with Express Clone

It's a sensitive design. Use high gain preamp tubes and turn it up and it's going to squeal at some point. Hand pick preamp tubes that balance the available gain. And don't expect that this amp can ever be dimed on all controls and remain stable. This is a high performance thoroughbred racehorse of ...

Re: Tl806 ported cab with different speaker

Different speakers require different optimized cabinet designs. The TL806 is specifically designed for specific EV speakers for optimal results.

Google "Thiele-Small parameters" which can turn into quite an education.
