Re: Modded DR Too Much Filtering?

I may be blind, but why don’t I see the ground wire off the secondary side of your OT landed to the speaker jack? Is that blue wire really the ground, or one of the other speaker taps? PS, I just went to the Kendrick site and the picture of that 11 winding $225 buck OT DOES have a black wire that I...

Re: Modded DR Too Much Filtering?

I haven't completely given up on it though.

I really appreciate all the help everyone here has given me, so thank you!

Re: Modded DR Too Much Filtering?

I am starting to lose my patience with this amp. It's been over 5 years that I've had it and not been impressed by it. I wired up weaker power filtering, and the amp is a little better, but it still sounds sick, as well as boomy and dark like it's always been. I tried a few other suggestions from pe...

Re: Modded DR Too Much Filtering?

The only locations w/o grid stoppers is the 2nd stage and before the PI. I'll try putting some there. I'll also add a 47pf PI snubber. I had one in there for awhile that made the response a little better at the cost of some treble. The amp is already pretty dark and bassy, requiring extreme settings...

Re: Modded DR Too Much Filtering?

I guess the main reason I don't use it that way is because of how much hum gets back into the sound. I had a 100K in the loop at one point (no pot) and REALLY liked the response, but the hum was a little ridiculous.

Re: Modded DR Too Much Filtering?

Stevem wrote: Mon Feb 14, 2022 12:21 am You might want to head in the other direction completely and drop back on the uf until the amp hopefully gets spongy and then work your way back up.

Just keep putting the filters you have in series.
I'll do that. Thank you!

Re: Modded DR Too Much Filtering?

So you're talking about reducing the two series 100uf caps and not the 40uf at node B, right?

Would the amp have adequate filtering at that point?

Re: Modded DR Too Much Filtering?

Stevem wrote: Sun Feb 13, 2022 12:35 pm Good point being made here in this last post!

That 5Y3 is not going to last that long dumping into the 50uf of that stacked first filter node!

There only rated for 20uf into a filter cap and even half that when feeding a choke first.
You're right!

What are my options?

Re: Modded DR Too Much Filtering?

Stevem wrote: Thu Feb 10, 2022 9:11 pm With only 370 volts on the output plates and -32 for bias that sounds like a cold setting to me.
I set the bias with a Eurotubes bias meter at 10-11 watts dissapation as recommended for 6V6 tubes. That's all I've had to know about biasing to "make it work".

Do you think the bias circuit is off?

Re: Modded DR Too Much Filtering?

I had a 5Y3 in this amp before. It felt softer in the onset of distortion compared to the GZ34, but it merely "delayed" the excessive punchiness because it still got that way when I turned it up a little higher than with the GZ34. I got a little more usable distortion, but not much, and I wasn't goi...

Re: Modded DR Too Much Filtering?

Also, I changed the 100k mid pot to the stock 25k. I thought the 100k pot might've been affecting the bass pot not doing anything. I ran it through the Tone Stack Calculator, and saw how little bass control was in the tone stack. With a 25k pot, the bass control is back to being effective. I haven't...

Here is the voltage chart with a 5Y3 instead of the GZ34.

Re: Modded DR Too Much Filtering?

Ok, I'm back! Here is the schematic of the entire amp. A quick guide: -Layout based on a Blackface Fender -The power supply section, phase inverter, and power amp section, as a whole, are organized exactly like a BF Fender. -The Vibrato Channel (main channel) starts on the bottom left -The Normal Ch...

Re: Modded DR Too Much Filtering?

Thanks for the help guys, I really appreciate it!

Sunday is the earliest I'd be able to check the 5Y3 voltages.
