From what I read in Valve Wizard articles and books you can go surprisingly high on pentodes with little to no audible effect.
Think (some at least) Supro amps had 47k on the power valve grids too.
Don't have access to my book just now to confirm though!

But just checked the RS website and even their photo of their 6l6wgc has TAD writ large on the base!

Hadn't noticed the TAD on the base but I did get a couple from RS Components fairly cheaply as tester valves and noticed they looked identical to the naked eye to the TAD 6L6, but rated at just 23 watts on the website, so maybe they are downrated TAD rejects?

Funny I was about to suggest a Tele type guitar. Roll the tone knob down to minimise the twang. Don't strum as hard as you would your acoustic, but I bet the muscle memory kicks in and makes that difficult. Maybe the twang is being accentuated by you playing more forcefully than a pure electric play...
