Ultra Logrithmetic taper Potentiometer

Fender Tweed Deluxed 5A3 thru 5E3 and Tween Tremoluxes wired the 1st stage coupling cap into the wiper of the volume pot. Fender subsequently discontinued this and wired pots "normally" as voltage dividers where the output is taken of the wiper. Wiring the input to the wiper creates a naroow taper a...

Re: Screen voltage compared to Plates

And thanks to "Nuke" for his last post. As we all grow older and perhaps played way too loud at way too many gigs (I made a living playing guitar for 25 years) , smaller powered amps with the best possible tone is the mission. I should have clarified my initial post that given 3 parameters: maximum ...

Re: Screen voltage compared to Plates

Nuke posted: "And that's why I've replaced so many burned screen resistors and output tubes for the last several decades in people's guitar amps, where the screens are typically supplied approximately the same voltage as the plate supply. ie, 450v plate and 440v screen at the typical 50 watt 6L6GC A...

Screen voltage compared to Plates

For lower powered two 6V6 amps over the years that do not have a choke, Fender has used a variety of values in the first drop resistor. Generally standardizing in the Princeton-Rev fender used a 1k. Earlier amps such as Harvard 5F10 used 470r, Tremolux 5E9A 2k5 and Deluxe 5E3 4K7. I don’t know if bi...

Re: Tweedle Dee on Carter

I'm coming real late to this discussion so if anyone's still out there. The 10k in the MacDonald 3 filter version changes the PI plate resistor value. The 10k in the 4 drop version that C. Wilson so gratiously has provided so much info about is set at the top of the cathode tail just below the 4k7 b...

Hammomd 1750EP correct fit for 5E3 chassis?

I'd lke to try a Hammond paper wound 1750EP for a 5e3 build. The correct width for 5E3 mounting is C-C 3 1/8" with the width being 3 5/8 " I have attached the Hammond 1750EP spec sheet which shows mounting holes at 2.81" with a 3.25" width. This does not seem correct as a drop-in replacement. Has an...

Re: Tweedle Dee 4 Filter caps or 3 ??

Except for the 3 vs 4 filter caps, both have the unique HAB additions to the venerable 5E3: (1) VI Separate cathodes and (2) the VIIB PI has increaesed value for all components plus the LNFB and an adjustment pot to fine tune voltage on the 6V6s grids. As best as I can tell HAB used the same circuit...

Tweedle Dee 4 Filter caps or 3 ??

I followed previous discussion on this website and converted one of my 5E3 builds to Tweedle Dee as best as I could determine circuit from Charlie Wilson's good work and the Ceriatone Schematic. Then I came across an ad from a shop in Nashville, Carter Vintage, where they evidently were selling one ...

5E3 Build Primary Filter Value

I'm about to build a Deluxe 5E3 clone. I've worked on many Fender amps and generally a bit more value to the primary filter drop and even doubling the screen drop to 40 uf seems to help in Super-revs, Twin-revs and similar; tighter bass and slightly quieter ac line noise if I liad everything out car...

5E3 Layout for least humm

I have two original 1958 Deluxe 5E3s. One has nearly noiseless background humm. The other about 2db higher noise. Both are acceptable low background noise levels and obviously use the original Fender layout. Both amps have electorlytic cap replacements as needed; I use F&T for filters. While I have ...

5E3 Transformer: Heyboer or PacificAudio?

I've built more complex amps (AB763 + Trainwreck, Boogie, Marshall 2204, etc w/ optoisolator switching & reverb) and am going to do a 5E3 because they sound great. Several good options for transformers though I will avoid Mercury Magnetics as I tried one of their 5E3 OTs in an original 1958 5E3 and ...
