Re: 18 Watt TMB Build issues

Adding the 22K ohm 1/4 watt resistor at pin 2 of V1 did nothing.

Re: 18 Watt TMB Build issues

Thanks for all your help. I started troubleshooting again. I have about 10% feeling in my right thumb and 1st two fingers so I can use a soldering iron semi-safe. I have the 68K resistors from the normal channel input jacks at V1 but they are covered by heat shrink. That's why they weren't seen. I h...

Re: 18 Watt TMB Build issues

Thanks Phil_S, The reason for the surgery is to correct the fact that my fine motor skills are so poor that it is impossible to do what you suggested with the wire. Using a razor blade is a guaranteed finger slice. So solid core wire is is my nemesis. Anyway I already ordered the replacement wire. T...

Re: 18 Watt TMB Build issues

Right Richie, it is the newer type of solid core wire. I use high quality wire strippers but you have to rotate them to cut all of the cloth neatly and the wire is slightly scored. It is a pain in the butt to work with and lifting the turret board is always a scary operation. If you bend the soldere...

Re: 18 Watt TMB Build issues

Thanks Richie, I had a carpal release done 25 years ago and I don't remember complete numbness. Patience... That Dupuytren's contracture is bad, I hope you are doing good now. M Brother still plays clubs after a full release on his fret hand that needs a fuse done and a fused and really bad set of a...

Re: 18 Watt TMB Build issues

So since I am going to "redo" the amp, which layout is recommended? I like blues, hard rock and metal. I know a lot has changed and some designs are considered better. Surgery went well I think. I expected pain but there is none. no feeling at all in the whole hand either. Like a dead man's hand. I ...

Re: 18 Watt TMB Build issues

I used a schematic and layout that was extremely preliminary back in 2003. I ordered some new stranded wire as the solid core breaks if you mess with it much. I'm going to just redo and rewire the whole thing and use shielded cable where needed. Chasing gremlins is a waste of time at this point. The...

Re: 18 Watt TMB Build issues

Thanks Reeltarded, I needed some humor about now. I'm getting a carpal tunnel release and an ulnar nerve relocation oon the right hand. The surgery has been rescheduled 3 times since last October so I am really jazzed to finally go forward. I have absolutely no feeling at all in my hands so the 2nd ...

Re: 18 Watt TMB Build issues

I'll have to let this project go on hold for a week now.
Prepping for surgeries on my wrist and elbow tomorrow.

Thanks you all for the help.

Re: 18 Watt TMB Build issues

I redressed all the pots. I followed the grounding exactly as shown in the layout attached. No change at all. I thought maybe because I had the extra grounds I somehow had a ground loop or something. I shortened grounds and verified all the connections. I guess it is a matter of what haven't I touch...

Re: 18 Watt TMB Build issues

I use a chopstick and gently tap on the tube. If you turn up the volume high, you only have to barely tap it to hear it. I keep my fingers out of amps after getting hit by the cap can on a 2203 with 6550 tubes. I was thrown against a wall and all the tubes broke when the amp fell off the bench and o...

Re: 18 Watt TMB Build issues

What concerns me is that if I turn up the volume but leave the MV low enough that it doesn't squeal, if I tap on V1 it sounds like a guitar pickup. V2 and V3 don't do this and it is not normal.

Re: 18 Watt TMB Build issues

Littlewyan,

"Ok so you say the amp only squeals when you turn the master volume up. Does it still squeal if both pre amp volumes are turned down?"

YES....I turned both channel volumes to zero and the squeal is there when the MV is at about 3/4 full.

Re: 18 Watt TMB Build issues

I rerouted the OT speaker out to the outside of the chassis and removed the speaker jack from the chassis to make sure none of the wires were anywhere near the rest of the amp and hung it outside the chassis. No change. I Moved the OT input wires, twisted them and reversed them, no change. I resolde...
