Were the F&T caps faulty?
How did the new caps work out?
I find this a puzzling problem since presumably the filter cap didn’t run that hot before. My initial guess would be a faulty cap maybe having its voltage overrated or some internal short or something.

Re: Why DPDT switches and not SPST on 4-hole Hiwatts
The Hiwatt DPDT switch dates from the early days (60s-70s), before widespread code enforcement and during the era where handwired Bulgin plugs were in common use. At that time a reversed hot/neutral was a non-trivial risk. In the Hiwatts they also used a DPDT switch for standby, but used an unused ...

Re: Why DPDT switches and not SPST on 4-hole Hiwatts
There are plenty of double pole switches in Marshall amps. Used for power as well as standby switches. Just browse through the schematics. Thanks for correcting me, Sluckey!! I need to be more careful. Ok, so is there some "advantage" to using DPDT in the mains? Maybe advantage is not the right ter...

Re: Why DPDT switches and not SPST on 4-hole Hiwatts
I'm in the U.S. I understand electrical code varies by region so that might explain the use of DPDT being the norm in France. But Marshall uses SPST for both Mains and Standby (?). I suppose one could "get away" with using SPST switches for both Mains and Standby in a Hiwatt circuit but I have conce...

Why DPDT switches and not SPST on 4-hole Hiwatts
Can you all please help me understand something, I'm using Heyboer/Mojotone Hiwatt 50w PT for DR504 clone. I'm following Mark Huss (Hiwatt.org) schematic for the most part and layout but obviously my PT only has 120V on the primaries so no voltage switch. Is it possible to wire this PT up for a DR50...

source for grey coax
AG people: I need your help...please? I found this Belden 9907 https://www.prowireandcable.com/belden-9907-coax-coaxial-cable-thinnet-10base2-ethernet-thinnet-20-rg58-duobond-ii/ that (at least by eye) looks close to what came on the early 70's Hiwatts. Seems reasonably priced. My question: What's y...

Yes, gldtp99's hiwatt clones are really beautiful.
The 50 watter I am trying to build will already be too much amp but still excited to give it a go.

Re: Hiwatt DR504 chassis
I really tried hard to find a DR103/504 chassis here in the U.S. but I had no luck. Sorry. On the other hand, I did order a Modulus Amplification kit (which is top notch by the way) and even with the hefty shipping - nearly doubling the price of the chassis - when converted to $$ it is not that much...

Re: Hiwatt appreciation thread - to help control my urges
Passfan, now that’s a Hiwatt I don’t see often. I would love to hear what that sounds like.
Do you have clips, audio, video? Cranked?
Thanks for posting your beautiful combo!

Re: Is there a Hiwatt out there somewhere packing active tone control circuitry...
Just guessing here: maybe he's trying to say the tone dials on Hiwatts have a greater range of sweep compared to many other amps of the day (which is true in my experience anyway compared to say Marshalls). For the record I am not trying to be a wise-ass and I'm also not a Hiwatt guru or anything el...

Re: Hiwatt appreciation thread - to help control my urges
Thank you! You know I never really listened to Tommy Bolin, but Alex Lifeson was one of my childhood heros, too. It started with the Hemispheres album (love La Villa Strangiato). Alex was pretty much getting his distortion through pedals though I think. Alex also exposed me to Hiwatts in the late 70...

Re: Hiwatt appreciation thread - to help control my urges
Nice examples of unmolested Hylight era Hiwatts are becoming very hard to find, but there are some killer clone-makers out there, in particular, Hi-tone and Reeves, that make a DR504 in different flavors that just nail the Hiwatt vibe. Do you have some old pictures of your Hiwatt gear you can share ...

Re: Hiwatt appreciation thread - to help control my urges
You can play Hiwatts in sound-proof rooms... Seriously though, with some sort of attenuation the Hiwatts are extremely versatile. I can see why you preferred them to Marshalls. Now I happen to like the Marshall sound (plexi and metal panels) but don't like that the more modern marshall sound l...

Re: Hiwatt appreciation thread - to help control my urges
Still beautiful. Thanks. I'm curious about the Groove Tubes since the Hiwatt I played had them as well. Is it that it makes re-biasing less necessary assuming you get a matched quad of the same "number"? If not, how much of a pain is it to rebias a Hiwatt - since most if not all don't come with a bi...

Hiwatt appreciation thread - to help control my urges
First post. Been lurking for some time, and the Amp Garage is one of the few places that has a dedicated Hiwatt subforum (albeit shared with Vox but I don't hold that against anyone). I've recently become very enamored with the Hylight-era Hiwatts and the early Biacrown-amps of Harry Joyce. I recent...
