Re: Are Black Sable tubes snakeoil? does it make a difference?

how could cryo possibly do anything except warp and move stuff around inside a tube assembly thats already built? A tube is not a bearing hub or piston, its an assembly of freakishly dissimilar metals and coatings inside a glass bottle. If it was tested or vetted in any way prior to making it really...

Check out the Supro ckt at the bottom, they wiggled the bias of the input triode. I have a Supro 6422 Tremoverb with a similar very simple and elegant tremolo ckt and it sounds delicious.

Re: Need help finding an OT

http://www.tubesandmore.com/products/P-TF24038 This is pricey but a very robust reverb transformer used for the Fender Vibro king. Side note: it is awesome for replacing crap stock champ xformers, fits the same footprint and is good for 10 watts and has 8 ohm secondary@5.4k pri. I concur that as a r...

Re: SED Winged C St. Petersburg Stopped Making Receiving Tubes

That does suck that the best production tubes are no longer in production but we must be used to that by now, right? Seems like thats been the case since the mid 70's when I started looking for tubes for my stuff. My Dad always had mismatched brand el34's in his Eico Hf 89 audio power amp, but I sus...

Re: Flaming Maple

Super nice work!! Fyi here in North Ga. I can buy flamed maple for 1.86$ a board foot, needs to be finish planed and ripped to size but still, thats cheaper than pine shelf board from Home Depot. I have to go through piles of it to get nice flame but they always have it. Suwanee lumber in suwanee ga...

Re: 1979 D103 wierdness

I haven't been home to work on the amp in a while, but I did spot this Hiwatt 200 in my pals shop in Richmond, Va (metro sound and music) Its beat but legit, has the cut in half serial plate with the "right" font, i.e. nonMusic Ground counterfeit BS. New JJ kt88's, didn't test it but he doesn't sell...

Re: 1979 D103 wierdness

Rrright. i can read and I have his books. What does the voltage reference triode do under heavy load? I understand how a long tailed pair differential amplifier works, why is it advantageous to use a fixed voltage reference? Chief mushroom cloud, I lurk, I read your posts. I get it, your sense of hu...

Re: 1979 D103 wierdness

Dig it!! Thats what I've been hoping to find somewhere, thanks Martin! Mark has some voltages for a 200 watt clone on his site but this is the first voltage info for a 50 or 100 watt that I've seen:) Maybe its similar but I was curious about how much drive is necessary for max output on a quad of el...

Re: 1979 D103 wierdness

I use a 400 watt resistive dummy load when testing, thanks for the suggestions. The thing sounds pretty clean and loud, thats what I don't get. I took some voltage readings on all the tubes, unfortunately I didn't bring my notebook, on the road. I'll post the info when I get home, I'll grab some sco...

1979 D103 wierdness

So I've had this Dr103 or some years, used it daily in a band and since it worked fine, clean and loud, it was never on my bench except for rebiases, retube ( different issue than this thread) I have more free time now so I hooked the thing up to my test rig (sig gen, dummyload, two oscopes, power m...

Wet caps?

Wow, if a component I used changed value by a significant amount by baking it dry I certainly wouldn't use it. There's something WRONG with it, it's going to condition to normal (relative) humidity levels and change values, or fail from corrosion. I'd be most worried about shelf life due to moisture...

Re: SC 120/ Hiwatt Conversion Pics

Wow, nice work!!! Prettier than a dr-103 inside. I get around 478 on the plates of my 81 non ckt board 2 input dr-103 with 124vac. I installed a bias pot but took it out and went stock when I tried RG's voltage bucker. It sounded WAY better and all voltages then matched the published schems, 460 on ...
