I ended up using an old computer power supply case. It's vented, has a switch and a fan.

Re: Ampeg VT-40 on the Verge of Meltdown

That's a great amp. I've been using that model VT-40 as my #1 for about 10 years now. They're finicky. I'm usually in it about twice a year just to test things and make sure it's running ok. Cap job is a must. There is plenty of room inside to use single caps and turret strips. It'll save you some c...

The Fender OV 52 reissue pickups are great pickups to my ears and won't break the bank.

Re: Ampeg inductor substitute, V2 build, various questions

The early Ampeg SB12's used 7868 power tubes. You may want to check there and see if it helps. Fliptops does sell the power and output transformers for both the SB12 and V-series. I've checked before for inductors - I recall finding them (or close enough) at Mouser. McMaster Carr carries the vibrati...

Re: Europe trip!

If you're heading to Europe for beer the Kulminator in Antwerp, Belgium is a must stop. It's one of the top beer bars in the world with a "menu" that looks like a phone book. It's not a very big place but the beer is amazing. Beer Advocate gave it a score of 100 and those guys hate everything....

Re: snap in caps

I've used CDE 380 LX (maybe the 381LX - I'll have to double check) snap in caps to rebuild a few Ampeg V-Series with. The spacing on them will pop right into the bottom holes of a terminal strip which makes for easy soldering. The body will hang a bit lower than the bottom of the strip so I needed t...

Re: $#ity cell phones

I like my MAC laptop. I just switched from a Samsung Galaxy to an Iphone 5 about a month ago. This is a terrible phone! The service is spotty at best. I have had several people call me back on my office phone because of all the static on my cell. My info doesn't always get sent with calls or texts s...

Re: Bill Kirchen

He comes to town occasionally and plays a tiny little bar that may hold 50 people on a good day. He (and his band) have always been fantastic, they put on a great show and he is a really nice guy. And I feel like I'm getting some serious guitar lessons whenever I see him play.

Re: Ampeg V2

V2's are hard to come. VT40's are much more common. Fliptops sells the transformers - and lots of other parts for Ampegs. It's gonna be a lot cheaper to buy a used one than build one. Great amps. Been gigging with a VT40 for the last 5 years or so. The master volume is a huge help on these guys and ...

Re: Ampeg V2

What year V2 is that? All the V-Series amps I've been in (I have several) have a removable metal plate. Take off the plate to access the circuit board. You've still gotta flip over an amp that weighs as much as a small car but you don't have to remove the board. Does that V2 not have a plate? AL **e...

Re: Lee Jackson Metaltronix M-1000

Just dusted mine off and played out with it a few weeks ago. First time I've had it out in years. Did a pretty good John Haggerty (Pegboy, Naked Raygun) impression. What a beast. GREAT sounding amp. 8)

Re: Ampeg VT-22 noise

I usually have a standard "fix it" plan when working in the V-Series Ampegs. It's likely overkill but it gives me a little more peace of mind if I'm going to be playing the amp out. Check (and usually replace) the plate resistors on the power tubes. They go sometimes. I have a VT22 with a chunk blow...

Re: Cheap way to make a turretboard

Not to pick a fight, but I'd love to see your documentation on the carcinogenic properties of FR4. The MSDS on the stuff seems to indicate that it is more a nuisance than anything else. http://www.acculam.com/MSDS-Epoxyglas.pdf I assume that is the manufacturer MSDS? Sigma-Aldrich has a very thorou...
